Is Justice Ever Served?

.

Every story has three sides.
Yours, mine and the facts.

- Foster Russell

* * *

6 Years, 4 months and 25 days ago my best friend at work was murdered by his wife.

She was eventually tried and found guilty. Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal, thus upholding her conviction and sentence.

She is the State’s only female inmate on death row. But, I assume, she won’t be there much longer.

I'm not sure how I feel about this news. He and I had worked together for thirteen years. I still think of him almost daily. And of his wife. And of their two kids, now 17 and 13 years old.

Since I have never known the pain of having a close friend or loved one murdered, I am not sure how I would react myself. In my rational detachment, I oppose capital punishment. In the heat of passion, would I rejoice that my government murdered for me?

I grieve over the situation you describe. A part of life - a part of its wholeness - has forever been broken, has been destroyed, never to be whole as it was again. No human act of punishment or justice can ever make it wholly right again.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

Justice never seems to really solve anything. It may prevent future occurrences, but it won't erase the past or the pain.

So sorry to hear this.

Not only did it take your friend's life, it ruined hers and that of their two children. The recent Supreme Court decision will put her back on the clock. This hurts her family as well as his.

I believe in "an eye for an eye." But capital punishment should never be carried out until DNA can prove the person's guilt.
