Where's Your Strength Come From?

It's important
that you feel strong,
not necessarily be strong.
- Christopher McCandless, Into The Wild
(paraphrased)

I went to see Into The Wild tonight. Wow. What a movie! Beautiful scenery. Good people. Incredible experiences. Tragic ending.

If you want something in life,
reach out and grab it.

I, too, often feel stuck, wishing I could have go out and have a great adventure. For the most part I've lived by the rules. I've done what was expected.

Unfortunately this movie reveals the harsh reality that great adventures don't always end well.

I think that it is the "romance" in us that clings to the idea that great adventures end well. I'm guessing that most do not.

Still there is that voice within us that calls us to great adventures, good ending or not, so that we know that we have lived. Sadly, like you note, I too have far too often "lived by the rules" and "done what was expected".

I think the greatest adventure is to see and experience the beauty and sadness and eccentricity of the moments you encounter in your daily life. It is the ordinary things, the small rituals which express the life we lead.

Well, that's the risk, isn't it... Doing nothing can end badly too.

Playing by the rules doesn't necessarily preclude adventure. I think we're often imprisoned by our own rules. And some of the wildest adventures await us in own home town.

Lem: ”… there is that voice within us that calls us to … know that we have lived.” WOW. What a statement!

Cooper: “… the greatest adventure is … in your daily life.” Cooper, YOU are a living testimony to your thought here. And I believe that you’ll find that nothing’s more important to you than your family. And changing poopy diapers.

Joe: I’ve always said that it’s more important to do something – anything – rather than nothing. You, too, are so right: playing by the rules IS an adventure.

Wow... y'all are so reverent about this film and it's impact... I was just gonna say that I hear the dude who plays the main character is hot.

PSS: I found it one of those movies where everyone leaves in silence, deep in thought. You probably did, too.

Ps: The quote comes from a very-mature 23-year old in the movie. I would suspect that the movie's theme may not resonate well in India. Let me know.

CB: You're right! Astute observation.

I am very curious about this movie. I saw some clips and saw the interviews with some of the actors in it. I would like to go see it.

I read the book but didn't know there was a movie. I wonder if I'll watch it. Amazing story, to be sure.

P.S.

OMG. Just went and bought the soundtrack album on iTunes after listening to this Eddie Vedder track. Thanks.

I got all emotional when I saw the trailer for this film. I said to myself, "Self, here is a guy who is willing to live."

Can't wait to see it. That and Across the Universe.
Have you seen it yet? Too bad you are so far, we could be movie buds.
